Last Friday, Mind Spa Mental Health Centre had the honour of sponsoring a hole at the Light For Veterans Foundation Charity Golf Tournament, held at Hylands Golf Club in Ottawa. As our team spent the afternoon under the trees, sharing conversation, offering mental health resources, and connecting with the community, we were reminded that healing happens not only in therapy rooms, but also on golf greens, across picnic tables, and in moments of shared experience.
At the heart of this event was Daniel Marsh, Veteran, Founder, and CEO of the Light For Veterans Foundation. His story is one that stayed with us, and we want to share it with you.
A Story of Resilience and Purpose
Just three years ago, Dan was at rock bottom. Freshly diagnosed with PTSD and unsure of where life was headed, he found himself facing the difficult and often isolating journey many veterans know all too well. It was through peer-led programs like Camp Aftermath and the Caddie School for Soldiers that he began to find his way back.
“These programs,” Dan told us, “literally saved my life.”
Through the support of others who had walked a similar path, Dan found a renewed sense of connection and, eventually, his why. That pivotal experience became the foundation for the Light For Veterans Foundation, which now helps other veterans and first responders access the same kind of healing, purpose, and peer support.
Each year, the Foundation hosts charity golf tournaments that raise funds for grassroots organizations like Warrior Adventures Canada and the Caddie School for Soldiers, promoting recovery through shared experience, nature, and movement.
Why Stories Like Dan’s Matter
At Mind Spa, we work closely with individuals experiencing trauma and PTSD. We understand how difficult the healing journey can be, and how essential it is to have the right support systems in place. Dan’s story speaks to something we see in our clinical work every day: the incredible power of community, lived experience, and peer support in creating space for transformation.
Healing is often found in unexpected places, in quiet conversations, in shared laughter, in the courage it takes to show up. Dan’s vulnerability and leadership are reminders that even when we feel lost, connection can guide us forward.
A Day of Connection and Community
Our Clinical Directors, Michelle Massunken and Tina Wilston, attended the tournament to represent Mind Spa and offer our support. From meaningful conversations with golfers to lighthearted exchanges and shared snacks, the day was filled with moments that reflected the very essence of community care.
We were deeply inspired by the work being done not only by Light For Veterans, but also by the partner organizations whose missions align so closely with our own.
