Finding the right Veteran mental health support in Ottawa can involve more than one type of care. For some Veterans, support Veteran Mental Health Support in Ottawa: Neurofeedback, Transition and Reintegration
Finding the right Veteran mental health support in Ottawa can involve several forms of care and connection.
For some Veterans, support may include psychotherapy. Others may explore nervous system regulation, neurofeedback, group support, or resources that help with the transition from military to civilian life.
On August 13, 2026, MindSpa Mental Health Centre joined CannaConnect Ottawa for a Veteran Mental Health Lunch & Learn focused on these conversations.
The afternoon brought Veterans together with Michelle Massunken, MSW, RSW, Clinical Director and Military and First Responder Care Lead at MindSpa Mental Health Centre, along with MindSpa team member Emma Boudreau-Chapman.
The conversation created space to share information about neurofeedback, transition and reintegration, group support, and available mental health resources. It also created an opportunity to listen directly to the questions and perspectives of Veterans in the room.
A Community Conversation About Veteran Mental Health
Mental health support can feel more meaningful when education happens within spaces where people already feel connected to community.
The CannaConnect Ottawa Wellness Lounge offered that kind of setting.
During the Lunch & Learn, Michelle and Emma shared information about MindSpa services while spending time listening to Veterans and learning more about the experiences, questions, and needs that matter to them.
Those conversations are also helping inform MindSpa’s upcoming Transition & Reintegration Group, which is planned for the Ottawa Wellness Lounge this fall.
Those conversations helped inform MindSpa’s Veterans Transition & Reintegration Group, an eight-week virtual group beginning October 28, 2026. The program was shaped with input from members of the Veteran community.
Neurofeedback and Nervous System Regulation
One of the topics discussed during the event was neurofeedback.
Neurofeedback is a form of brain training that uses information about brainwave activity to support greater awareness and self regulation.
At MindSpa, neurofeedback may be explored by people experiencing concerns involving stress, attention, emotional regulation, sleep, PTSD, and trauma related symptoms.
For Veterans, this can be especially relevant within a broader understanding of how prolonged stress, operational experiences, and trauma can influence the nervous system.
The mind and body can carry patterns that developed during periods of sustained alertness and survival. Learning more about these patterns can help people understand their responses with greater clarity and compassion.
Neurofeedback may form one part of an individualized mental health plan alongside psychotherapy, medical care, and other forms of support.
Transition From Military to Civilian Life
Leaving military service can involve changes that reach far beyond employment.
Daily structure may change. Relationships may shift. A familiar sense of community can become different. Questions around identity, purpose, routine, and belonging may also emerge.
Veterans Affairs Canada recognizes military to civilian transition as an area where Veterans may benefit from recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration support.
These transitions can take time.
Having access to spaces where Veterans can reflect, learn, and connect with others who understand aspects of that experience may offer meaningful support during this period.
Transition and Reintegration Group Support
MindSpa’s Veterans Transition & Reintegration Group is an eight-week virtual group for Veterans aged 18 and older who are navigating the transition from military service to civilian life.
Beginning October 28, 2026, the small group will explore changes involving identity, purpose, routines, relationships, work and community. Michelle Massunken, MSW, RSW, will facilitate the group.
The program was shaped through direct input from members of the Veteran community. It offers a structured space for reflection, practical support and connection with other Veterans navigating similar changes.
A complimentary 20-minute pre-assessment helps determine whether the group is an appropriate fit.

Understanding VAC Mental Health Coverage
The event also included discussion about Veterans Affairs Canada mental health benefits.
VAC provides mental health benefits for eligible service related mental health conditions and services delivered by approved mental health professionals.
Coverage depends on each Veteran’s individual circumstances, approved conditions, and treatment needs.
For Veterans exploring therapy, neurofeedback, or other mental health services, understanding available coverage can make the process of accessing care feel clearer.
Supporting Veterans Across Ottawa
MindSpa Mental Health Centre provides military and Veteran mental health services for people navigating concerns including PTSD, trauma, operational stress, anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, and the transition to civilian life.
MindSpa has locations in Kanata and Gloucester and also supports clients through virtual services.
Community events such as the CannaConnect Lunch & Learn create another way to bring mental health education into spaces where Veterans already gather, connect, and support one another.
They also allow clinicians to listen.
That listening matters because mental health care is strongest when people feel heard, respected, and included in conversations about the support being developed for their communities.
Continuing the Conversation
The afternoon at CannaConnect Ottawa reflected something important about Veteran mental health support.
Education matters. Clinical care matters. Connection matters too.
The thoughtful questions and feedback shared by Veterans helped shape MindSpa’s Veterans Transition & Reintegration Group and continue to inform the way the team approaches Veteran mental health support in Ottawa.
For Veterans and families exploring available support, learning about different options can be a gentle place to begin.
